Discrimination (Jersey) Law 2013

The Discrimination (Jersey) Law 2013 included the first protected characteristic (Race) and was introduced on 1 September 2014. The protected characteristics were extended to sex, sexual orientation, gender reassignment and maternity & pregnancy from 1 September 2015, and from 1 September 2016 the protected characteristic of age will be introduced.

A guidance note together with a detailed guide (covering Race, Sex and Age protected characteristics)  have been produced which give employers and employees a greater understanding of the Law and the current protected characteristics. The detailed guide contains a number of examples which will help the reader to understand the terms direct and indirect discrimination; harassment; victimisation; protected characteristic and the exceptions to the Law.

Employers are encouraged to review their policies, so as to ensure that they are compliant with the Law. To assist Employers, we have prepared an Employer Checklist.  For Employees we have produced a chart to assist if you think you have received less favourable treatment.
