Can I get legal aid if I need to talk to a lawyer?

A system of legal aid does exist and every person in Jersey is entitled to make application for legal aid, providing that the sum at issue is greater than £500. A lawyer (known as the Acting Batonnier) administers the legal aid scheme on a day to day basis and a new Acting Batonnier is appointed every two years.

To apply for legal aid, you must attend in person to the legal aid office. As the offices change annually, you should contact the Freephone service: 0845 8001066 to obtain the current address. Office hours: 8:15am - 9:15am Monday through till Friday.
